Academic background

Bente Somsen (1995) received her bachelor degree in Biomedical Engineering at the Technical University Eindhoven in 2016, after which she continued with her Master of Science in the same field. During this master she specialized in the direction of Chemical Biology, performing her graduation project in the group of prof. dr. ir. Luc Brunsveld and dr. Christian Ottmann on the stabilization of 14-3-3 protein-protein interactions (PPI) using fragment-based drug discovery. As a final part of her master Bente did her internship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA. Here she worked in the group of prof. dr. Bradley Pentelute on the design and optimization of label-free peptide library screens to search for peptides as drug discovery leads. Bente graduated cum laude for her Master of Science in 2019, after which she started her PhD in the group of prof. dr. ir. Luc Brunsveld and dr. Christian Ottmann.

Research profile

Currently, Bente is working as a PhD candidate in the group of prof. dr. ir. Luc Brunsveld and dr. Christian Ottmann. Hereby she performs research to 14-3-3 proteins, and specifically their role in the regulation of nuclear receptor proteins. Furthermore, she investigates the possibility of stabilizing 14-3-3/nuclear receptor complexes with the use of small molecules that act as ‘molecular glues’ between the proteins. This approach is then used to identify alternative methods to modulate nuclear receptor activity in order to design drugs for various diseases.
