Academic background

Arjan Loenen studied medical engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology where he received is BSc degree in 2013. After participating in a summer school at the Sichuan University (Chengdu, China) and doing his externship at Kyoto University (Kyoto, Japan), he started his graduation project in 2016. This was a joint project between Xilloc Medical and the Amsterdam Medical Centre. Within this project, he investigated 3D printed, patient-specific implants utilized for corrective osteotomies of the distal radius. Loenen obtained his MSc degree in 2017. With his engineering background and interests in the clinical application of new technologies, he wants to interact with academic hospitals, researchers and medical companies. At the moment, he is a PhD candidate working on the development and assessment of 3D printed, titanium, lumbar interbody fusion cages. At the TU/e he is developing finite element models of a relevant patient dataset to estimate the mechanobiology of the cages under physiological conditions. Meanwhile he is running a pre-clinical study at the Maastricht University Medical Centre. By combining the conclusions of both models, he strives to contribute to the development of better performing implants in the field of orthopedic surgery.
