Academic background

Antonio Aloi received his bachelor degree in Material Science in 2010 in the University of Bari, working on the generation and detection of terahertz radiation in time domain spectroscopy. In 2013, he received the master degree (cum laude) in Material Science and Technology. His thesis concerned the study of relaxation dynamics of synthetic eumelanin suspensions using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in the UV-Vis range. In 2013 Antonio Aloi joined the group of Dr. Ilja Voets as a PhD student, at the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS), at the Eindhoven University of Technology. He is member of SOMATAI (Soft Matter at Aqueous Interfaces), a Marie Curie Initial Training Network programme. In November 2017, he was awarded the title of Doctor after the succesful defense of his dissertation entitled: "On the edge: imaging soft interfaces with single-molecule localization microscopy". He is currently a postdoc in the Self-Organizing Soft Matter group.

Research profile

During his PhD, Antonio Aloi focused on the development of an innovative super-resolution microscopy technique (iPAINT) tailored to investigate interfaces of different nature (liquid-liquid, air-liquid, and solid-liquid). This new method allowed to shed light on the morphology and assembly of complex soft materials in three-dimensions, such as emulsions, foams, polymeric micelles, colloidal dispersions, and supramolecular polymers.

Antonio's new task will be to develop further super-resolution microscopy to investigate how ice crystals grow when influenced by the adsorption of antifreeze proteins. In parallel, he will expand the investigation of complex materials to the spetral domain by single molecule spectroscopy. Flanking super-resolution microscopy with single molecule spectroscopy will open up new ways to probe chemical and structural heterogeneities and to sense possible local changes in the molecules environment.
