Research profile

Annika Hupfeld is an Assistant Professor and part of the Everyday Matters team of the Future Everyday cluster in the Department of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology. 

Her research interest is in the field of interaction design and human-computer interaction with a focus on the design of digital technologies for everyday living. Specifically, she is interested in exploring the role and potential of design in reconfiguring everyday socio-material arrangements of co-habitation in domestic and urban space. Annika has undertaken several field studies of the mundane practices entangled with 'stuff', including books and e-books, tableware, loyalty cards, and Christmas gifts with the aim of understanding some of the social challenges and opportunities of ubiquitous computing, such as dematerialisation, activity tracking and profiling, and automation.

Annika has a background in industrial design and human-computer interaction as well as several years experience working as an interaction designer in industry and corporate research. 

Academic background

Annika completed her PhD in the School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham under the supervision of Tom Rodden and Andy Crabtree. She holds an MSc in Human-Computer Interaction with Ergonomics from University College London and a Diplom (MA) in Product/Environment Design from the Hochschule für Gestaltung Schwäbisch Gmünd. Before taking up her position as Assistant Professor at TU/e, Annika was a Research Associate in Design Informatics at the Edinburgh College of Art. She has also held positions as a user interface and interaction designer at Microsoft Research Cambridge, Siemens AG, IAO Fraunhofer Institute of Industrial Engineering, and Matsushita Electric Works.
