My ambition is to integrate temperature responsive photonic coatings for novel applications in fields of energy saving, health and security.

Stijn Kragt is a doctoral candidate in the Stimuli-responsive Functional Materials & Devices (SFD) group under Professor Albert Schenning and Professor Dick Broer. Stijn works on temperature responsive coatings based on mixtures of reactive liquid crystals and liquid crystal polymers. This combination provides an easiliy processable and programmable material with potential for industrial scale fabrication of coatings, which among others can serve as optical sensors, security labels or as energy saving smart window.

Academic background

Stijn started his academic career in 2010 at the Radboud University in Nijmegen. In 2013 he completed his Bachelor's degree with a project on macroscopically ordering of semi-flexible polymers using liquid crystals under supervision of assistant professor Paul Kouwer at the department of Molecular Materials. He then started the Master's programme Physcial Chemistry at the Radboud University. His graduation project titled "Directing soft matter in water using electric fields" was carried out at the same department. After a 5 months industrial internship at DSM Biomedical, Stijn completed his Master of Science degree. He currently works as a doctoral candidate in the Stimuli-responsive Functional Materials and Devices group.
