Introduction / mission

The group’s methods include parameter estimation, model fitting, latent variable models, mixed models, missing data, statistical process control, survival & reliability theory, time series analysis, and statistical learning methods.  One of the central themes is the analysis of high-dimensional temporal data sets and other large data sets.

Organisational profile

The group actively explores new research lines in Data Science and maintains many strong ties with industry, including biopharmaceutical companies, chemical industry, medical centers and international research institutes. Some examples: the Framingham Heart Study, a long-term longitudinal data set on more than 5000 participants (started in 1948) has resulted in TU/e collaborating with Boston University on new statistical methods. The group also engages in a strong collaboration with the Academic partners of Maelstrom Research, a leading international institute on harmonization of data from multiple cohort studies. The Statistics group also collaborates with the pharmaceutical industry on validation and implementation of rapid microbiological methods to test medicinal products and processes.  

Together with its industrial partners, the group is a leading a Big Data & Reliability Platform. The group is involved in a wide variety of projects:

  • OFF/ON: Dutch PTA-COAST3 project on novel on-line analysis methods for factories.
  • Delphi4Led: an EU Artemis project on new simulation tools for LED design.
  • Daisy 4 Offshore: Dutch TKI project to develop new early failure detection algorithms to support maintenance of offshore wind turbines.
  • The SRE tool: software reliability tool developed together with the Refis company
