The research area of our group is Multi-scale Mechanics of Solids group aims at understanding, predicting and tailoring structure-property-performance relations in natural, engineering and functional materials based on the underlying microstructural fine scale phenomena leading to emerging behaviour at the macroscopic, application, scale.
Small scale, invisible phenomena can lead to an emergence of large scale effects with unprecedented impact
The focus is on fundamental and methodological development of multiscale techniques applicable to various materials and related physical phenomena, ranging from advanced high strength steels to metamaterials and from the behavior of structural elements under static conditions, to the wave propagation phenomena and the development of damage and fracture. The aim is to bring the multi-scale mechanics to a next level by focussing on the emergent multiscale behaviour due to non-trivial interactions across different space and time scales. This can lead to the development of new metamaterials with unprecedented properties, resulting in the development of new technologies and devices.
