The research of the group focuses on the multiscale analysis of the mechanics and thermodynamics of polymer systems. Modeling and numerical simulation are employed to better understand and eventually tailor-design polymer systems fit for applications.
The group carries out research about the structure-property relations for the mechanical and thermodynamic behavior of complex solids and liquids, in particular polymers. The techniques employed include nonequilibrium thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, multiscale modeling, and coarse graining. Recent projects are concerned with, e.g., anisotropic viscoplastic deformation and the intrinsic kinetics of (physical and chemical) aging of polymer glasses, friction and wear of tyres, and the rheology of spongy-particle suspensions as well as rheologically-complex liquid-liquid interfaces.
