Organisation profile

Introduction / mission

Within the EM Antenna Systems Lab our research efforts are focused on merging traditional microwave engineering and antenna disciplines. In this way we address the growing need for highly versatile and flexible radiation properties of future wireless systems. By applying systems thinking concepts, we strive to elaborate the best solution for the overall system by identifying and developing innovation where it is needed.

Organisation profile

The Antenna Systems Lab focusses on the growing need for highly versatile and flexible radiation properties of future wireless systems. An important aspect of our research covers the study of the propagation properties of the wireless channel using our in-house developed channel sounding systems. Using the knowledge of the channel characteristics, the application insight of our collaboration partners and our antenna and micro-/millimetre-wave system expertise, we develop and investigate innovative antenna systems for emerging applications. Applying systems thinking concepts, we strive to elaborate the best solution for the overall system by assessing the antenna performance not only by standard antenna parameters, but also by their performance for the intended use-case. Next to the radiating elements, our antenna systems also include passive and active front-end circuitry. Owing to the need for higher integration, the co-design and co-integration of antennas and front-end circuitry forms an important aspect in our research. Considering the densification of the frequency spectrum, the associated coexistence demands, the increase in the number of components per system and the associated issues with coupling, non-linearity, and intermodulation, our expertise in microwave networks and advanced integrated filters allow for unique integrated antenna system solutions.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy
  • SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
