Organisation profile

Introduction / mission

ADE analyzes programs for buildings, develops concepts, investigates tectonic solutions and evaluates constructions and materials.

Highlighted phrase

Covering the core of the architectural profession: How to make a good building?

Organisational profile

The unique fusion of architecture and technology is the driving force behind the innovative strength of ADE. The chair works from the assumption that good architecture comes into being when architectural design and technical virtuosity merge harmoniously. Key research areas include sustainable concepts, shifting typologies, new building technologies and exploring the power of materiality within architectural design.

ADE focuses on making architecture. Conceiving buildings that are good on a real as well as a conceptual level. The Chair focuses on engaged architecture: innovative, smart, applicable.  At ADE we passionately propagate the reciprocity of design and making. Design practice, technology & engineering are carefully and harmoniously integrated, from a human and environmental perspective.

Research and education is geared towards exploring the sculptural expression of buildings, development of new spatial scenarios and materiality in architectural design. Key research areas include sustainable concepts, shifting typologies, and new building and manufacturing technologies within architectural design. ADE is also involved in the Smart Cities and Living Cities research programs. Challenges posed by societal change, climate change and technological innovations are an inspiration for developing new future-oriented sustainable architectures that can empower our built environment.

ADE graduates have found their way in leading architectural firms all over the world shaping, engineering and designing solutions for current and future challenges our globe is facing, from climate change, reuse and recycling, generating clean energy, CO2 reduction and aging population to accommodating refugees.

ADE encourages sharing and collaborating with other expertise, from within our Faculty (e.g. 3D-concrete printing and bio-based materials), academic realms (international workshops), governmental bodies (a range of municipalities and the Dutch real estate department), organizations (e.g. GGZ Eindhoven) and research networks (Arena, EAAE). You can find ADE members represented in scientific and professional journals, international Summer schools, conferences, exhibitions as well as in the popular media, always contributing to a synthesis between culture and technology.
