This course is about basic visualization concepts and design. The students will learn how to effectively design visualization tools. Lectures will provide the basic principles and theoretical basis. The theory will be individually tested in one exam and applied to one specific data set and scenario. Groups will be formed and each group specifies a goal, designs, and then builds a visualization tool. Each group must follow and document the visual design process, justifying their choices, and implement and evaluate their design. Each project is concluded with a presentation (screencast) and a written final report. In addition, the development of professional skills is an important aspect of this project.
Objectives
Registration for the course JBI100 is limited to 300 students. You are placed on a waiting list until the official Q2 registration deadline. After this date the list will be reviewed. Priority will be given to bachelor Data Science students, DS&AI students having to fulfill their homologation requirements as well as DS&AI pre-master students, DSAI students, and bachelor Computer Science students, in that order.

| After completion of the course students:- have knowledge and understanding of the basic principles in Visualization, Interaction principles in Information Visualization, Visualization design process and evaluation;- are able to apply these principles to effectively design visualizations;- are able to effectively communicate the (interim) results both orally and in writing. |
