Description

In this course, we cover both the transportation business and the optimization of its operations. We study transport decision-making on all three levels of the decision hierarchy (strategic, tactical, operational), in long-haul and short-haul transport, and in the transportation of people and goods. For example, We learn about mathematical models for building up a network of flights operating between cities, routing cargo bikes within cities, or about connecting different transport modes such as air, water, road, and rail in international transport chains.
We use both mathematical modeling (mixed integer linear programs and their implementation in Python&Gurobi) and basic exact and heuristic algorithms.

Objectives

The student will be able to:

  • Explain the function of transport and distribution within companies
  • Explain and differentiate between the different transport and distribution activities
  • Illustrate the key factors to consider in the planning and control of transport and distribution operations
  • Read, write, extend and correct basic mathematical models for transportation problems using linear programming and integer linear programming
  • Explain simple algorithms for transport and distribution problems, and apply them manually
  • Implement basic mathematical models for transport and distribution in code using Python and the Gurobi optimization package
