The seminar focuses on the study and discussion of state-of-the-art research topics in Statistics, Probability, and Operations Research (SPOR). Students engage with selected research articles, book chapters, and related materials, focusing on modern methodological developments and theoretical advances. The course centers on critical reading, structured analysis of scientific literature, leading scientific arguments, and the communication of technical content through written reports and presentations. Particular attention is given to developing rigorous reasoning, mathematical writing, and effective presentation of complex concepts. Attendance is mandatory for all units, that includes the discussion sessions focussed on scientific reasoning, presentation sessions, and the special lectures on presenting and writing mathematics. In case a unit cannot be attended, please contact the responsible lecturer for an alternative exercise. At most two sessions can be compensated this way.


The types of problems and research conducted in the SPOR cluster are diverse. Statistics focuses on developing systematic approaches with a sound mathematical basis that enable the analysis of complex data sets, particularly temporal data, for descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics. Probability investigates networks by modeling them through random graphs and studies their structure and functionality using stochastic processes and algorithms. Operations Research involves the mathematical analysis and optimization of complex systems, encompassing discrete optimization, stochastic modelling, data-driven approaches, decision-making under uncertainty, and stochastic learning.

Objectives

After completing the course, the student is able to:

-         Locate and identify relevant scientific literature on a specified topic,
-         Read critically and interpret research articles in the specified topic,
-         Explain and summarize state-of-the-art approaches within a given research area.
-         Collect, order, and summarize  information from multiple sources into a coherent survey of a specific topic,
-         Produce a well-structured written report using appropriate mathematical and scientific conventions,
-         Design and deliver a clear and logically organized presentation on a technical subject,
-         Communicate complex mathematical or methodological ideas effectively to a scientific audience.
