Seminar SPOR

Course

Description

In this seminar we will review state-of-the-art research conducted in the area of Statistics, Probability and Operations Research (SPOR). This provides students a good insight into these fields of research in preparation for a Master project in the SPOR cluster. The types of problems and research conducted in the SPOR cluster are quite diverse. Statistics focuses on developing systemic approaches with a sound mathematical basis that allow for analyzing complex temporal data sets to perform descriptive, predictive, or prescriptive analytics. Probability investigates networks, by modelling them through random graphs, and study structure and functionality through stochastic processes and algorithms on them. Operations Research involves the mathematical analysis of optimizing complex systems, both from a perspective of discrete optimization and stochastics (e.g. data-driven approaches, decision making under uncertainty, stochastic learning). In the seminar students will study, present, and discuss selected research articles and book chapters and/or Master theses. Students will also execute a small research project to learn and evaluate specific research approaches.
