Professional portfolio takes place in the first two quartiles each academic year. It consists of (guest) lectures and workshops in Q1 and Q2, and a modelling week between Q1 and Q2.
The lectures in Q1 are about the IAM curriculum: the courses, the profile/ and specialization, the honors programm, internship, final project. A representative of each mathematical specialization will present about the research in their group, the courses they give, and the internships and projects they offer.
The lectures in Q2 concern career opportunities. IAM graduates working in various types of jobs will present about the nature of their work.
In Q1 and Q2 there will also be several workshops: inclusive collaboration, personal leadership, presentation skills, ethics, writing of mathematics, and scientific integrity. The PIT (Professional Identity Training) sessions for master students are also offered within this course.
At the very end of Q1, there will be a modelling week. During this week, you will work in groups on real problems posed by problem owners from industry. The week starts with presentations by the problem owners, and concludes with presentations of the solutions by the students. The students will:
• Gain experience in solving real-life problems • Report back their findings to the problem owner and TU/e supervisor • Work in groups/teams • Learn how to capture the essence of a practical problem in terms of a mathematical model • Learn how to extract value from mathematical modelling • Learn to have a professional attitude when dealing with problems coming from the public/industrial sector • Become aware of the diversity in culture, attitude and character of the work team members.
To pass the course, you must attend the lectures and workshops, participate in the modelling week, and hand in a reflection report by the end of Q2.
