Description

This lecture serves as an introductory course in plasma physics. The presence of charge, the possibility of magnetizing plasma, the existence of a sheath, and the different non-equilibrium regimes in which a plasma discharge can exist, are just a few of the topics that are treated. In addition, the description of beams and the generation of radiation are treated.

Objectives

Obtain knowledge on the characteristics of plasma, e.g. the Debije length, quasi-neutrality, (ambipolar) diffusion, deviations from equilibrium, space charge, waves and radiation transport. Gain understanding how concepts from a phase-space description can be used to characterize particle beams and how plasmas and beams can be used to generate radiation.
