Description

After a short introduction and overview of normal anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the cardiovascular system, non-invasive and invasive methods in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease will be discussed. An important issue is to gain insight in how to adapt and simplify scientific measuring methods to be applicable in clinical practice, without loosing scientific correctness.

This course contains 2 parts
  1. Pathophysiology of the central circulation (heart and lungs)
    Adaptation of the heart to exercise will be studied under physiologic (health) and pathologic (disease) conditions. Specifically, adaptation of the heart to valvular disease will be discussed as an example how clinical syndroms develop and to demonstrate the rationale of a scientific approach as the basis for treatment. Principles and techniques as used in right and left heart catheterization will be overviewed, such as pressure measurement in the circulation, flow and shunt calculations, oxymetry, estimation of cardiac output and valve surfaces, etc. Special attention will be paid to regulatory mechanisms in the coronary circulation in health and disease. Finally, monitoring methods of critically ill patients will be dealt with, focussing on the syndrome of shock.
  2. Pathofysiology of peripheral circulation
    In this part different exposures of peripheral vascular disease will be discussed, including obstructive- and aneurysmatic vascular disease and how different adaptation mechanisms work. Several specific vascular diseases will be discussed, as well as the different treatment options. Principles and techniques of specific invasive and non-invasive imaging techniques will be overviewed.
    Attention will be given on the principles of patient-specific decision support based on advanced imaging techniques and mathematical modelling.

Objectives

In this course physiological and pathophysiological aspects of the cardiovascular system will be dealt with from a practical perspective. Special attention is paid to the methodology that is used in clinical practice to qualify and quantify cardiovascular diseases.

 
After passing the course, the student is able to:
1Pathophysiology of the central circulation (heart and lungs) In this course, a number of physiological and pathophysiological aspects of the cardiovascular systems will be discussed from a practical point of view, i.e. with emphasis on the methodology to assess and quantify cardiovascular parameters of disease as used in the every-day practice in hospitals. After passing this course the student will have knowledge and insight in the pathophysiology of the central circulation and will understand the concepts of a normal heart function and heart function failure.
2Pathophysiology of peripheral circulation In this course, a number of physiological and pathophysiological aspects of the cardiovascular systems will be discussed from a practical point of view, i.e. with emphasis on the methodology to assess and quantify cardiovascular parameters of disease as used in the every-day practice in hospitals. After passing this course the student will have knowledge of different exposures of peripheral vascular disease and how different adaptation mechanisms work.  The student will understand the concepts of patient-specific decision support based on advanced imaging techniques and mathematical modeling.
