The patent landscape project includes the following tasks:
- Choose a technical area (technology selection). Students groups are free to select an area of choice.
- Set out a list of key questions for the analyses the landscape study will address. Students are expected to come up with a selection of different analysis, typically between 4 and 8 of them, that together provide the required insights that the landscaping study aims to give
- Choose an appropriate database (or databases). Students are free to select an appropriate data set. Several of these data sets have been introduced during the PDRS Specialization course
- Perform the analyses;
- Report on the findings, with a written report informing a potential entrant firm about the situation it will find in the chosen technical area;
- Present the findings during a class meeting.
Assessment by the PDS and technical supervisor will be based on the degree to which students satisfy the tasks that are described above. That includes, inter alia, the reporting task (specific points of were set out above at the section 'Report') and the presentation. 70% of the grade is based on the joint assessment of the two supervisors. Each group will receive individual feedback on their report. 30% of the assessment is based on the peer review score. This means that each group is being assessed by a number of other groups (to be decided by the coordinator). This takes place on pre-defined criteria, where the assessors must justify their scores. Should the peer review scores raise suspicion at the course coordinator (for instance by differing strongly from the supervisor assessment, or being very divergent), the coordinator reserves the right to overrule the peer assessment score. If a student fails to get a sufficient grade for the project, he or she will need to redo the project. As indicated, the project course if offerred in two different quartiles in the year.

Students that successfully finished this course should be able to:
A. Perform a patent landscaping study, in a specific technical context,
(A1) making an appropriate technology selection and developed a good understanding of important the technological elements
(A2) identify, collect and process the necessary underlying patent data
(A3) perform a sufficient set of patent landscape analyses
B. Report the findings and present them to a larger public;
C. Cooperate in a group setting to perform a data based study.
