0EM130 studies long-term dynamics of sociotechnical transitions. In the last decade, the study of sociotechnical transitions (and sustainability transitions in particular) has become a major growth area in the Innovation Sciences. Sociotechnical transitions are long-term processes, in which societal and technical transformations interact in powerful yet often unexpected ways, and produce radical historical change. Research shows that sociotechnical transitions may take decades (sometimes even centuries) to unfold. It also shows that during this time, transitions display strong spatial and cross-sectoral dynamics. This makes transitions difficult to understand—let alone govern. This course introduces approaches to grasp these long-term dynamics of transitions.
