Description

A project group of eight students has to design a mechanical structure. The focus of the project is on the mechanical design of the system configuration including the connections between the various parts, and the realization and testing of a prototype. During the design the appropriate mechanical design principles should be applied. The design should satisfy requirements regarding stiffness, strength, realization, and installation. For this purpose first-principles and approximating analytical calculations are carried out, possibly accompanied by a more detailed finite element structural analysis. Also aspects of realization are included in the design process. The project group prepares a mid-term presentation slides about , the concept designs, a sensitivy analysis of driving paramers, and the proposed concept selection. The group presents her final design by means of test on the model or prototype,  and a final report.
During the project the student:
  • experiences the various stages in mechanical design, in particular concept design, concept selection, and detail design, as well as the design activities: create, analyze and synthesize.
  • applies selected mechanical design principles from the course 4CC50 Design Principles.
  • caries out structural analyses by means of analytical calculations (2D, first-principles and approximations), and where relevant finite element analysis (3D, system, parts, and connections) to justify design choices.
  • incorporates standard mechanical machine elements in the design, and takes into account the necessary aspects of realization.
  • realizes and  tests a model or prototype of the proposed design, to reflect on design choices.

Objectives

After completion of this project the student is able (in a team) to complete a mechanical design process under supervision, which includes to produce and execute a design plan using an approach that is adequate for the design problem. Specifically for this project, this includes
  • to apply mechanical design principles in the context of mechanical structure design for strength and stiffness, and consider aspects of realization,
  • to apply structural mechanical analysis, and elements of optimization  in coherence for the purpose of structural design regarding strength and stiffness,
  • to make technical drawings with proper dimensions and tolerances,
  • to apply computer aided design and engineering tools during the various design stages,
  • to realize and possibly test a model or prototype of the proposed design, and to reflect on the design choices.
