This course provides an introduction to the field of mechanical engineering. Mechanical Engineering focuses on designing, producing and improving products, processes and systems. Mechanical Engineering covers a wide range of areas, such as mechanics, materials technology, micro- and process technology, energy and combustion technology, dynamics and control. These areas are discussed in more detail during various courses in the curriculum. For the student these subjects may seem to be isolated. The interaction often becomes clear at the very end of the study. In this course, interaction will be shown by means of:1. colleges
2. practical trainings
3. Challenge Based Learning assignment (CBL)
Objectives
1. The students are able to design a 3D truss structure.2. The students are able to analyze the mechanical properties of the structure in order to improve the design.
3. The students learn to operate (make first experience with) computer programs to analyze the mechanical properties of complex structures.
4. The students are getting familiar with the 7-phases principle of design and build a scale model of the designed truss structure with the material provided.
5. The students are getting familiar with the standard requirements concerning the form and style of technical communication including reporting in writing and by presentation (pitch).
Learning objectives professional skills
Writing
- The student is familiar with the standard requirements concerning the form and style of a technical report
- The student is able to write a technical report.
Planning and organising
- The student has actively contributed to the conversation about study management
- The student is critical of his own study attitude.
- The student proves to have a(n) (pro) active attitude towards planning and organising his study and other activities.
Social Safetey-Time out Theatre play
Students follow an interactive theatre session on social safety, discrimination, and transgressive behavior. This theater session is held by Time Out Café and is a program that was co-developed with TU/e and other institutions in 2022.
The goal of this interactive theater session is to open the dialogue on social safety, to open students’ eyes on where discrimination and transgressive behavior takes place and in what way we can search for the boundaries between what is okay, and what is not.
- Raise awareness about transgressive behavior and what it entails by providing examples.
- Students will be informed what resources are available to them if they experienced transgressive behavior
