    Description

This course offers an introduction to Econometrics with a special focus on methods used by data scientists. It will teach basic tools that enable the estimation of causal relationships and of various parameters of interest in different micro- and macro-economic settings. Students will learn the baseline assumptions necessary for estimation and develop critical thinking about situations in which said assumptions may not hold. Practical examples and exercises will cover a range of topics in business and economics.

    Objectives

Based on the topics above, the course has the following learning goals. After successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
    1. Select the appropriate econometric tool for a given data set and context.
    2. Apply the appropriate econometric tool to obtain estimates of a relationship or parameter of interest.
    3. Scrutinize the assumptions required by a given econometric model and illustrate the properties of the model using examples.
    4. Identify situations of endogeneity, heteroscedasticity, nonlinearity, non-stationarity and apply an econometric method that addresses such features.
    5. Analyze the effects of economic policies or of business decisions and investigate the quality of the empirical results
