Co-operating in their CBL-group students design a construction, which will launch a projectile. During the design process, the 7-phase approach is followed. The choices made through the process as well as the evaluation of future design changes should be justified by simulations and physical equations, which describe and forecast how the construction behaves and the projectile moves between the moment of release and descent. Parts of the simulations are performed in Siemens NX-motion. Subsequently the construction is manufactured by Rapid Prototyping (SLS). Then, by an experiment, tests are done to verify whether the model fits the reality.Content training CAD-1
After a short introduction to CAD and the content of the training, the online tutorials must be completed independently. If you encounter problems, a helpdesk is available to answer questions. In the training the following will be discussed: building parts from sketches and solids, combining these parts in an assembly, and applying the ‘best practices’ for collaborative CAD modelling.
Objectives
Students are able to (in a team):- apply knowledge and skills of mathematics and dynamics to predict and optimize the behaviour of a real world design.
- assess dynamical models for real world problems critically based on the simplifications that are made and the real launching results.
- create a design for a given problem following the “7 phases approach” under supervision.
- evaluate the design process of the launching mechanism with respect to the “7 phases approach”
- evaluate the designed product based on the RPCs and simulation results.
- compute the dynamic behaviour of CAD models with NX motion.
- construct a mechanically sound prototype by assembling multiple parts.
- apply CAD skills such as modelling, assembling and constraining to create printable parts for a 3d design.
- collaborate with fellow students to design a launching mechanism.
