Description

1. Computer architecture
a) von Neumann model (datapath, control flow, storage elements)
b) single-cycle, multi-cycle processors (only principle)
c) pipelining (principles)
d) processor design (design of instruction sets)
e) memories (basic memory hierarchy; basic cache principles)
f) number systems (various binary formats)
2. Programming using the C language:
a) functions, arrays, pointers, strings, structures, recursion, file I/O, dynamic memory allocation, basic data structures
b) stack and heap organization and operation
c) machine and assembler languages
d) step-wise refinement to develop (design, write, debug) a C program to solve a problem


 

Objectives

The aim is to introduce the information part of electrical engineering, to provide insight in the relation between hardware and software of computer systems. At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- describe the relation between hardware and software of computer systems;
- illustrate the operation of a single-cycle, multi-cycle and pipelined computer architecture;
- create software algorithms and programs in the C language from an informal problem description.
