The proliferation of the Internet raises new opportunities and challenges for industrial designers. On the one hand, designers have the opportunity to leverage crowds and communities to better understand their needs, co-ideate and co-design their concepts, co-develop working prototypes and even get funds for launching their products into the market. On the other hand, designers have the challenge to design platforms for crowds and communities to meet, greet, communicate, collaborate and thrive. In this master’s course we address the theory, design guidelines and leveraging of crowds and communities in the design process. We then ask students to follow the design cycle and address how crowds and communities can support each step in the design cycle.
