Description

This course aims to explore the fundamentals of cell biological techniques. We delve into the principles and practices of the most common cell biological methods, including cell culture, cellular engineering, immunofluorescent microscopy, western blotting, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. This course focuses mainly on learning how to practically perform these techniques, how to critically interpret its results and how to design your own experiments using these techniques. Lectures introduce and/or support a subject/technique, after which an accompanying experiments are performed. Students will report experiments in a lab journal, which should show their critical understanding of the techniques and its results. Students will apply the obtained knowledge on the experimental techniques by providing a written experimental setup that correctly follows a research question and describes the application of the technique in a correct manner. During the course, the legislatory background of genetic modification is discussed and will be tested separately to obtain the SMT certificate for ML-II level. Attending the 8MM20 course provides students with the necessary practical skills and theoretical knowledge for starting a graduation project in the Laboratory for Cell and Tissue Engineering.

Objectives

- You will be able to explain the underlying principles of cellular engineering and cell biological detection techniques (i.e. cell culture, polymerase chain reactions, western blotting, and immunofluorescent staining).
- You will be able to perform the addressed techniques independently and show you’re capable of troubleshooting in case of unexpected events.
- You will be able to execute your work according to safe microbiological techniques (SMT).
- You will be able to design an experiment, containing the appropriate controls, using one of the addressed techniques and present this in a written experimental setup
- You will be able to keep track of your performed experiments and obtained results in a lab journal and use this to discuss your experiments and results.
- You will be able to discuss the technical value, quality and reliability of your obtained data and analyses.
