8GM15 is a 2.5EC extension of 8GM10. In addition to the content of 8GM10 (see below), in 8GM15 students self-define a deepening challenge based on the results of 8GM10. They address this in a disciplinary team of TU/e students only.

8GM10 content:

Bio-Tech-Med-Nutrition Interdisciplinary Team Training (BITT) is an interdisciplinary, challenge driven elective. Student groups consisting of Medicine (UMCU), Nutrition & Health (WUR), Biomedical Engineering (TU/e) and Biomedical Sciences (UMCU) are introduced to a disease-related problem by a patient and its doctor. You will develop a solution for this problem by making use of everyone’s expertise and experts you will partially find yourselves.

In this type of education, you will develop skills like design thinking and entrepreneurship which are not covered in a regular academic program. These skills can be very useful in the your future career. We want our BITT students to adopt interdisciplinary perspectives about a medical challenge. Specifically, the views of other disciplines and the end user (patient or medical provider). BITT uses real-life cases. Your proposed solutions can be a game-changer for patients and their families.

It should be noted that, as this project includes engineering, medicine, biological sciences, and nutrition, BITT becomes an important addition to master-level TU/e students. This course is jointly organized by Wageningen University, Utrecht University, UMC Utrecht and Eindhoven University of Technology.

Do note: This course is an extension of 8GM10. The latter course is taught at the following dates, outside the common TU/e timeslots, because of the involvement of other institutes:
The meetings in 2026 are: Feb 12: Kick-off UMC Utrecht (highly recommended); Feb 24, afternoon: Utrecht University (mandatory); March 12, afternoon, TU/e (mandatory); March 19, afternoon: Utrecht University (highly recommended); March 31, afternoon: Wageningen University (mandatory).
This extension starts after March 31, and involves self-directed teamwork.

Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course students are expected to:
 
  • Translate a real-life disease-related problem into a well-formulated problem definition;
  • Reflect on his/her personal interdisciplinary collaboration experience, and on the added value of an interdisciplinary approach to solve a disease-related challenge;
  • Acquire efficient communication skills to engage the challenge stakeholders;
  • Engage all stakeholders’ perspectives in the formulation of the solution to the disease-related challenge;
  • Contribute actively in the interdisciplinary collaboration and to enhance group dynamics;
  • Collaborate effectively while working in geographically distant settings and within a limited time frame;
  • Formulate, pitch, and defend a proposal that is scientifically sound, feasible, innovative, and interdisciplinary, which answers the problem definition.
 
Activities
Participate in interdisciplinary (boundary crossing) teamwork.
Attend three plenary days (lectures, interactive sessions, workshops).
Pitch your final solution with the aid of a poster.

Do note: this course is taught between half February to half June 2023. The definite dates will be communicated soon.

Taught fully online however, the plenary days will take place at different locations (see below)

Teaching methods
20 hours plenary, 20 hours group work, 44 hours of self-study.


Students will receive 2.5 ECTs upon completion 8GM10, and an additional  2.5 ECTs upon completion of the additional challenge in 8GM15. Instructions to write the report/proposal will be provided by the teachers

Objectives

Measurable Learning Goals:  
After passing the course, the student is able to:
1Translate a real-life disease-related problem into a well-formulated problem definition
2Gain insights in personal interdisciplinary competencies, that includes communication across disciplines and understanding the viewpoints of other disciplines
3Deal with practical challenges that come along with an interinstitutional team-based project
4Engage stakeholders’ perspectives in addressing a disease-related challenge
5Contribute actively in the interdisciplinary collaboration and to enhance group dynamics
6Reflect on his/her personal interdisciplinary collaboration experience, and on the added value of an interdisciplinary approach to solve a disease-related challenge
7Formulate, pitch, and defend a proposal that is addresses the problem definition and takes into account patient satisfaction, originality, scientific aspects, feasibility, and implementability.
8Move forward from a general multidisciplinary proposed solution to a clinical problem, towards a more advanced approach for implementation of that proposal, through disciplinary groupwork.
