Description

In this course, the main applications of information theory will be analyzed, including source coding, forward error correction (FEC) for noisy channels, constellation shaping, coded modulation, and coding for security. In particular, the course will focus on the most popular FEC schemes in both classical and modern coding theory, with an emphasis on the structure of encoders and decoders. Some of the FEC schemes treated in this course, like, e.g., LDPC codes, are the gold standard for today's communication systems such as digital terrestrial television or transoceanic fibre-optic links. The theoretical tools provided by information theory will help us to understand the rationale behind these schemes and to define their performance limits.
