Description

This course is an introduction to algebraic combinatorics. You will discover the beautiful interplay between algebra and combinatorics, learning how to apply algebraic techniques to solve enumeration problems, and how to use combinatorial methods to solve questions arising in other areas of mathematics. The course treats the basic material on graph spectra, association schemes, distance-regular graphs and completely regular codes. Finite geometries are studied both for their own sake and because they provide extremal examples.

Objectives

The student is familiar with the basic concepts and results in algebraic combinatorics: graph spectra, association schemes, finite geometries. The student knows how to apply linear algebra to a combinatorial setting and understands symmetry in mathematical terms.
