Description
Sustainability, widely defined as a capability of “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987) is probably the largest challenge of the 21st century. Added to worries connected to climate change and impending environmental tragedy, debates about sustainability now also incorporate economic and social dimensions of socioeconomic systems (Dempsey et al., 2011). Accordingly, sustainability is being increasingly cited as core issue in many research fields and disciplines, including academia and science as a system (some examples: Grahe et al., 2020; Hartgerink, 2019; Lüttke & Norris, n.d.; Szomszor & Quaderi, 2020; Toli et al., 2018). The aim of this session is to discuss and conceptualize the idea of sustainability in science, identify and list barriers hindering sustainability, and collect recommendations on making science and academia as a system more sustainable.| Period | 23 Jun 2023 |
