IHDP (International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change) and APN (Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research) organise the fifth International Human Dimensions Workshop: Institutional Dimensions of Global Environmental Change: Water, Trade, and the Environment, held in October 2006, in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Outline: The workshop began with an introduction to institutions and to concepts and hypotheses about the role of institutions in causing and mitigating global environmental change. Following that was an overview of global water, and then trade and environment issues. These issues were then analysed to identify the institutional dimensions of the problems. The focus shifted to regional and local applications of these concepts (including examples brought by participants from their home regions.) After the first week, a weekend field trip investigated local and regional water and trade issues. This case study provided a thread throughout the workshop and a testing ground for the concepts and proposals. The second week will focus on developing theoretical frameworks and research proposals.
