Emotion and Expression in Human-Robot Relationships

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talkScientific

Description

We introduce soft robotics for tangible interaction by approaching soft robotic systems as expressive and relational. Our design approach draws on performativity, temporal form, and composition. As materials transition from static to active states, a new class of robotic materials, comprising sensors and actuators, reveals expressive potential through both temporal (change-in-time) and reciprocal behaviors. This work is grounded in research at the Material Aesthetics Lab in the department of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology, where we explore the intersection of interaction design, robotics, materials science, and biology. The lab investigates how matter can be performative and environmentally responsive, supporting new material ecologies that we live with, wear, and interact with. Drawing on composition, fundamental to art forms such as theatre, dance, and music, we frame form-giving as a relational, multisensory design practice that moves beyond traditional functional approaches.
